Sex and the Christian Church (1 Corinthians 5:9-13, 1 Corinthians 6:9-12, 1 Corinthians 6:18-20)
Dave Sunman, 30 October 2016
Part of the Finding True Wisdom series, Sunday Morning service
Corinth was a city which was highly sexualised, particularly with the worship of Aphrodite. Many had become Christians but had brought their sexual ethics into the church with them. As a result they were failing to deal with sexual sin within the life of the church and so Paul writes to correct them.
We also live in a highly sexualised society and run the risk of bringing our world’s sexual standards into the life of the church. We will look at what Paul has to say about how we deal with our world, our church and ourselves in terms of sexual purity.
There may be elements of this sermon that would not be appropriate for children.

1 Corinthians 5:9–13 (Listen)
9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people—10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? 13 God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”

1 Corinthians 6:9–12 (Listen)
9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
12 “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.

1 Corinthians 6:18–20 (Listen)
18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
