Transformed by Christ (Philippians 1:27-30, Philippians 2:12-18)
Paul Davies, 31 May 2015
Part of the Philippians series, Sunday Morning service
In this passage, Paul returns to the theme of salvation (2:13). Their unity is a sign of their salvation, which is from God (1:28). Now they must work out what that salvation means because God has worked in them. They are to do this with a joyful heart, so as to shine as lights in a dark world. Jesus tells the disciples they are to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). By working out our salvation with the fear and reverence for God we shine the light of God into this sad and needy world.

Philippians 1:27–30 (Listen)
27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, 28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. 29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, 30 engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

Philippians 2:12–18 (Listen)
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, 16 holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. 17 Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. 18 Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.
