All you need is love . . .
What better theme for a February holiday club? Over 40 children joined a team of helpers from St Andrew’s and Hertford Baptist Church for two days of fun, singing, games, food, craft, and learning about God’s love.
Our super drama team presented the theme in entertaining sketches. Dave and Joe then helped us to understand what God means by love in
1 Corinthians 13:1-8. It was great to hear what the stories of Zaccheus and the Good Samaritan can show us about how to put this kind of love into practice.
Over the two days, amongst other things, we made cookies, drums (sorry parents!), Valentine cards and spaghetti & marshmallow structures. We did leaf rubbings for our Zacchaeus tree and reflected on how excited we might be if Jesus came to Hertford!
All the children had the chance to make pancakes, eat pancakes and join in a toss the pancake race. They had fun with a puppet workshop, enjoyed quizzes and some big games to run off some energy.
In quieter moments there were prayer stations where we reflected on how Jesus helped Zacchaeus change, and how he can do the same for us if we welcome him as Zacchaeus did,
We talked about how our feelings can be guided by the description of love in the Bible. The children took home some edible reminders of what Jesus really meant when he talked about loving your neighbour: we need to love everyone, even if they are wrinkly like raisins or different colours like Smarties!
We had two delicious lunches together (including many pancakes!) cooked by the amazingly adaptable catering team!
For our final story, Tracy explained how God sent Jesus as the perfect example of love and, because of this, we can all know God’s never ending, never stopping, always and forever love. And the children went home enthusiastically singing our theme song, ‘God’s love is big’.
We would love you to join us on the team for the next #holidayclub to be held at St Andrews on 20 and 21st August!
…love is all you need !
